Red dead-nettle (Lamium purpureum) Red dead-nettle. © Andrew Gagg / Plantlife Red dead-nettle. © Andrew Gagg / Plantlife Also known as red or sweet archangel, this stingless nettle has pink-purple flowers clustered amongst leaves towards the top of the plant. The leaves are hairy, heart shaped and has toothed edges. Some leaves near the top of the plant take on a purple tint. This plant can be mistaken for henbit dead-nettle which has similar flowers. The red dead-nettle appears to be a plant with a mixed reputation - at least going by names it has been called: to some it is 'sweet archangel' to others 'bad man's posies'! While often regarded as a weed it was used as a folk remedy for a variety of ills (it is a member of the mint family). It is also very attractive to the bumblebee - in fact in Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire it was traditionally known as 'bumblebee flower'. Red dead-nettle is one of the flowers we keep track of in our Wildflowers Count survey - click here to find out how you can help out. Distribution Found throughout the UK. Habitat This plant likes arable and waste land and can also be found in gardens, hedgerows and on roadsides. Best time to see Red dead-nettle has a long flowering season that can begin in February and last until November.
