White Fang (1906) was a sequel to the popular Call of the Wild (1903). It is the story of a dog born in the wild and brought to civilization. The story is viewed primarily through the eyes of its canine protagonist and deals with themes of morality and redemption.
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (published 1876) is a very well-known and popular story concerning American youth. Mark Twain's lively tale of the scrapes and adventures of boyhood is set in St.Petersburg, Missouri, where Tom Sawyer and his friend Huckleberry Finn have the kinds of adventures many boys can imagine: racing bugs during class, impressing girls, with fights and stunts in the schoolyard, getting lost in a cave, and playing pirates on the Mississippi river.

Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe tells the captivating story of a young English sailor, Robinson Crusoe, who is marooned on a desert island for nearly three decades where he is forced to fight for his life.
The novel opens with Crusoe disobeying his father and going out to sea. He plans a slave-gathering expedition which is compromised by a shipwreck on an island near Trinidad, where he toils for his daily needs. Crusoe manages to construct a shelter, secure a food supply, and comes to accept his stay on the island as the product of fate.
Robinson Crusoe is often considered the first novel, having helped define its new genre by dispensing the ornate style of the 18th century English upper class. Crusoe narrates, alternating between the first and third person, with little grandeur, often avoiding drama and emotion in favor of a simple approach to facts as the novel unfolds. The novel's theme of solitude laid the foundations for the modern central themes of alienation and isolation.

While the author labors to keep the subject matter palatable and entertaining, and Robert Whitfield is more than equal to the task, the text lacks what it takes to feed a thirsty ear. This is particularly true on Cassette Two, when we lose all sense of storytelling and find ourselves in a dark wood of fact reciting. It's worth spending 90 minutes reading an
actual book on Plato in this case, rather than depleting your Walkman batteries.
Ladies and gentemen, meet Sherlock Holmes's older brother, Mycroft. One of the most delightful surprises in the Holmes canon of stories written by Arthur Conan Doyle, the introduction of Mycroft is wonderfully realized in this Granada Television adaptation. Charles Gray stars as the larger-than-life yet shadowy Holmes sibling who rarely leaves his beloved Diogenes Club and, in effect, runs the British government with his long memory for policies and details. The case he brings to Sherlock (Jeremy Brett) and Dr. Watson (David Burke) is unnerving in its suggestion of real brutality: a professional interpreter of Mycroft's acquaintance was kidnapped and threatened with harm the night before if he did not agree to translate for another hostage, a Greek man under obvious duress and probable torture. The subsequent investigation runs afoul of some truly nasty people who will stop at nothing to achieve their ends. But before that happens, we're treated to the memorable moment when Sherlock and

Pride and Prejudice is the most famous of Jane Austen's novels. It was written between 1796 and 1797, and was called First Impressions. This story deals with issues surrounding marriage in the late 18th century and early 19th century, though many issues are universal. The main character is Elizabeth Bennet, a twenty-year-old middle-class girl possessed of a quick mind, sharp wit, and keen sense of justice. The story is a deep analysis of character. Every character is finely crafted, generally to contrast with others, and demonstrates a point about the social niceties of love and marriage.
Translated into over 100 languages, The Pilgrim's Progress is one of the most famous classics of literature. It is an allegorical novel, describing a Christian's journey through life to reach heaven. Part 1 was written by John Bunyan in 1679 whilst he was imprisoned for conducting unauthorized religious services, whilst Part 2 was not written until 1684, and is not included in many versions of this text.
