1987 - awarded the "Equerre d'Argent" for the Institut de Monde Arabe
1987 - receives an honourable mention for the Aga Khan Prize
1988 - forms a partnership with Swiss architect Emmanuel Cattani
1991 - becomes vice-president of the Institut Frençais d'Architecure
1993 - named Honorary Fellow of the American Institute of Architects
1993 - awarded the "Equerre d'Argent" for the Lyon Opera House
"His is not simply a response architecture, nor a purely ideological architecture attempting to apply an existing theoretical scheme to all situations; rather, Nouvel sees each project as an opportunity to analyse and refine his ideas and principles, to put his theories to the test before the challenge of building.
It is in this process of translation of the ideal into real space, this transition from the concept to the actual structure, that Nouvel's buildings acquire their complexity and their energy."
