[h=1]What to Bring on Test Day[/h]
You need to bring two things to the test center:

  1. Your Registration Number:
Your registration number is on your Registration Confirmation. Go to your online account the day before the test. Any changes made at the test site (like the start time) will be updated for you.

To view or print your Registration Confirmation:
    • Log in to your TOEFL iBT® Online Account.
    • Enter your username and password.
    • Once on your Home Page, click View Order(s). From this screen you can print and/or email your Registration Confirmation.
  2. Valid, acceptable identification (ID) document(s):
Test takers are advised to bring at least two forms of acceptable ID each time they report to a test center. With few exceptions, ID documents must meet all of the following requirements. Each ID document must:
    • be an original document; photocopied documents are not acceptable
    • be valid; expired documents (bearing expiration dates that have passed) are not acceptable
    • include the test taker's full name matching exactly the name used to register
    • include a recent photograph that clearly matches the test taker
    • include the test taker's signature

  3. For more information, see Identification Requirements.
If you do not bring valid and acceptable identification, or if the name on your ID does not exactly match the name on your registration, you will not be permitted to test and your test fee will not be refunded.

  • You may be required to show your ID and/or to sign a test center log at various points throughout the test administration.
  • If the test administrator questions the ID you present, you may be required to provide a supplemental ID. If positive confirmation cannot be made, you may not be permitted to test or your test scores may be held or canceled.
  • Prior admission to a test center based on a given ID document does not guarantee that that document will be considered acceptable. Test centers are not required to hold your seat if you leave the center to obtain acceptable identification.
  • Admission to the test center does not assure that the ID you provided is valid or that your scores will be reported. All reported cases of questionable ID are subject to review and approval by the ETS Office of Testing Integrity either during or after the test administration. ETS reserves the right to hold and/or cancel scores in the event that the ID requirements set forth herein are not met.
  • Your test fee will not be refunded if you are not permitted to test or if your scores are held or canceled because of invalid or unacceptable ID.

What to Expect

What to Expect

Because so many individuals and institutions rely on TOEFL® test scores, there are rules that need to be followed at the test center to ensure the test is administered in a fair, secure manner.
Watch our TOEFL iBT® Testing Site video for a preview of what you can expect on test day when you:

  • Arrive at the test center
  • Check in
  • Take the test
  • Report or cancel your scores
  • Sign out
Watch now >

Knowing what to expect can put you more at ease on test day. Here is what typically happens:
Before the Test

  • Plan to arrive at the test center at least 30 minutes before your specified start time. If you come late, you may not be able to take the test.
  • ETS reserves the right to ensure the security of the test content by using electronic detection scanning devices (for example, hand-held metal detectors/wands). Failure to comply will result in dismissal from the test center and your test fee will not be refunded.
  • Your photo will be taken and placed at your assigned seat. It will also appear on your score report.
  • You will be asked to sign a required confidentiality agreement.
  • Identification documents are the only personal items you are allowed to have in the testing room. Cell phones and other electronic devices are not permitted. In some test centers where there is no secure storage space available for your personal belongings, you will receive a plastic bag in which to store them. The plastic bag will be placed under your chair.
  • Your seat will be assigned by the test administrator.
  • No schedule changes can be made at the test center.
  • Testing premises may be videotaped for security reasons.
  • ID verification may also include thumb printing, signature comparison, voice biometrics or other forms of electronic ID confirmation.

During the Test

  • The test takes about 4 1/2 hours. No one is allowed to continue beyond the time limit.
  • There is a mandatory 10-minute break midway through the test.
  • Watch your pace so you do not go over your time for each section; the computer is the official timekeeper.
  • If you need help for any reason, simply raise your hand.
  • Cell phones and other devices are not permitted during the test or during breaks. (If you have health-related needs requiring you to bring equipment, beverages or snacks into the testing room or to take extra or extended breaks, you need to request accommodations in advance. Procedures for requesting accommodations are described in the Bulletin Supplement for Test Takers with Disabilities or Health-related Needs (PDF).)
  • A standard QWERTY English-language keyboard is used for the test. It is a good idea to practice on this type of keyboard prior to the test so that you are familiar with the layout and function keys.
  • Scratch paper is provided and must be returned at the end of the test. You must use up all your scratch paper before you can ask the test center staff for more.
After the test

  • Your scores will be posted online approximately 10 days after the test date.
  • You can view your scores online by logging in to your TOEFL iBT account and selecting "View Scores" on your home page.
  • Scores are also mailed to you (if you requested a paper copy) and the universities or institutions you selected approximately 13 days after the test date.
  • You can take the test again to improve your scores. There is no limit to the number of times you can take the test, but you cannot take it more than once within a 12-day period. If you already have a test appointment, you cannot register for another test within 12 days of your original appointment.

TOEFL iBT® Testing Policies

TOEFL iBT® Testing Policies

ETS is committed to providing tests that are fair to all test takers and administered in a secure environment. ETS has established and maintains policies and procedures designed to ensure the integrity and fairness of your testing experience.
[h=2]Test Security Procedures[/h] Make sure that you understand what is expected of you at the test center. More details about test center procedures and regulations can be found in the TOEFL iBT® Information and Registration Bulletin. Watch the TOEFL iBT® Testing Site video (Flash) for a preview of what to expect on test day.

[h=3]Checking In at the Test Center[/h] All test centers will require you to do each of the following:

  • Show ETS-approved forms of identification that contain a photograph and signature. The name on your ID must exactly match the name you used when you registered for the test.
  • Provide handwriting and signature samples.
  • Have your photo taken. Your photo will be displayed at your computer station and embedded into your paper score report.
  • Testing premises are subject to videotaping.
Some test centers also require one or more of these:

  • Metal detector scan or security wanding
  • Thumb scan
  • ID with electronic chip
  • Video monitoring of the testing room during the test
  • Other forms of electronic ID confirmation
[h=3]Taking the Test[/h] Once the test has started:

  • You may not have access to personal items such as books, electronic devices, handbags and backpacks, which are stored separately to maintain security. See the list of unauthorized aids in the "Improper Behaviors" section below.
  • You must present your identification to the test center administrator for verification upon return from a break.
[h=3]Improper Behavior Leading to Dismissal from Test Center[/h] Fraudulent or unethical testing behavior will not be tolerated. ETS may use statistical evaluation, or other professional evaluation methods, as evidence that a test taker did not complete the test or part of the test independently or that pre-knowledge of test questions or answers occurred. If ETS believes that a test taker may have gained an unfair advantage by sharing or obtaining test questions, topics or answers before, during or after the test, or that a test was completed in whole or in part by someone or with the assistance of someone, other than the registered test taker, ETS may exercise its right to cancel the test taker’s appointment in advance, hold or cancel the test taker’s scores and/or ban the test taker from future testing.
If your scores are placed on hold, you will not be able to send score reports to any institution or agency until the investigation is complete and the scores are released.
If any of ETS’s investigative methods result in a test taker’s scores being canceled, or if unethical behavior is identified on test day, ETS may also share its concerns with score recipients selected by the test taker, so that the information can be considered in the institution's or agency’s decision-making process.
ETS reserves the right to dismiss you from a test center, hold and/or cancel your scores, and/or ban you from future testing for reasons including but not limited to the following:

  • attempting to give or receive assistance; communication in any form is not permitted
  • taking the test for someone else or having someone take the test for you
  • removing or attempting to remove, reproduce or disclose by any means (for example, hard copy, orally or electronically) to any person or entity any test content, test questions, topics or answers, or scratch paper or notes relating to the test
  • referring to, looking through or working on any test or test section when not authorized to do so or after time has been called
  • failing to provide valid identification
  • obtaining improper access to the test, part of the test, or any information about the test (for example, pre-knowledge of test questions, topics or answers)
  • using or having a cell phone or other electronic device during the test or during breaks
  • using of any of the following unauthorized aids:
    • mechanical pencils
    • pens
    • scan pens
    • calculators
    • watch calculators
    • analog or digital watches
    • books
    • pamphlets
    • notes
    • unauthorized scrap paper
    • rulers
    • highlighter pens
    • stereos or radios with headphones
    • watch alarms
    • stop watches
    • dictionaries
    • test prep materials
    • translators
    • smartphones (for example, BlackBerry® or iPhone®)
    • any hand-held electronic recording, scanning, listening or photographic devices
  • tampering with the computer
  • leaving the testing room or test center building without permission during the test or during breaks
  • taking a weapon or firearm into the test center
  • taking food, drink or tobacco into the testing room
  • taking excessive or extended unscheduled breaks
  • engaging in any kind of disruptive or threatening behavior
  • failing to follow regulations specified by the test administrator, in any test day materials, in the Information and Registration Bulletin or on this website
ETS reserves the right to take any and all action — including but not limited to banning you from future testing or holding or canceling your scores — for failure to comply with test administration regulations or the test center supervisor’s instructions. If your scores are canceled, they will not be reported and your test fee will not be refunded.

If you travel to the test center and find out that the test administration has been canceled by ETS, you can reschedule your test at no charge or receive a full refund of your test fee.
