Zaha Hadid works her magic at the University of Economics & Business, Vienna

Currently under construction, Zaha Hadid’s dramatic design for a new Library and Learning Centre rises as a polygonal block from the centre of a new campus (masterplan by BUSarchitecture) at the University of Economic & Business, Vienna.
Employing both inclined and straight edges, the structure takes the form of a cube whose sweeping lines separate as they move inwards. These edges become curvilinear and fluid to create a free-formed internal public plaza at the centre of the complex. Additional facilities are contained within a single volume which divides and then intertwines to enclose this glazed gathering space. At 28,000 sq m the new centre is generous in size and will comprise of a ‘Learning Centre’ with workplaces, lounges and cloakrooms, library, a language laboratory, training classrooms, administration offices, study services and central supporting services, copy shop, book shop, data center, cafeteria, event area, clubroom and auditorium. Initiated through a two-phase competition in 2008 the project is slated for completion in 2012. Zaha Hadid commented: “I am delighted to be working in Vienna as I have a close affiliation with the city. As a centre of research, the Library and Learning Centre is forum for the exchange of ideas. It is very exciting for us to be part of the University’s expansion.”

Project Description from the Architects:
The Center for Promotion of Science building is part of the masterplan competition project in Belgrade, Serbia. Our masterplan design incorporates the existing building of the Faculty of Drama Arts with its proposed extension, and provides four new Faculties, a mathematics gymnasium, a science center with 50m tower, as well as the new building of the Centre of Promotion of Science. All are positioned on 8 islands. Among the islands, 5 plazas are developed.

Perspective from Arsenija Carnojevica Street

The CFPS building appears as a large platform from which a playful and relaxed manner promotes science to the widest public audience, and invited them to participate.
CFPS is a ring whose form is truly symmetrical. It is a one storey building, touching the ground with four big legs connected with four arches. In the center of the building is an outdoor atrium, from which we enter the main exhibition floor via escalators. The atrium is infilled with a forest of trees and three pairs of escalators as a main public circulation device of the building.
The forest atrium is the hub of the building. Conceptually, it positions Nature and natural systems as an ongoing source for scientific development. We, as human beings, are invited to start exploring Science from Nature.

Atrium

From the Big Lawn surrounding the building we enter the atrium under four arches. We are, as visitors, in the centre on the building, in the nature, surrounded by science. We take a route through main indoor exhibition level around the atrium and then continue to the large flat roof, to the science garden. Here we explore outdoor scientific experiments, participate in urban farming and play on the playground. Here we are in the science environment with a view down to the forest atrium, to the Big Lawn, the entire Science Campus and New Belgrade.
Our experience of science versus nature is thus accomplished.
The perimeter facade of the CFPS building is developed as a continuous belt of interchanging translucent, transparent and opaque glazing. The glass is set behind or between five white aluminum cladded stripes which embrace the entire building. The five stripes facilitate a smooth transition from four arching geometries into the flat roof. Between the stripes, on the southern and southwestern side of the building, solar tubes are mounted.

Outdoor Exhibition Space on the Roof

The perimeter wall of the atrium is entirely glazed, offering a view from the exhibition floor to the forest of the atrium. The wooden verandah embracing the atrium is partially covered by a large pergola.
The four legs and the arches connecting them are painted in white reflecting color.
The atrium ground is partially paved, partially grassed.
The main exhibition floor is entirely paved in wood. Its gridded ceiling has artificial lighting embedded in the grid. Its intensity can be changed according to different exhibition settings.

[h=2]Xeritown by X–Architects[/h]

X–Architects of Dubai have designed an urban complex called Xeritown that aims to be a more sustainable mode of development than recent projects in the emirate.

The development, proposed for the emerging Dubailand urban district, aims to encourage a pedestrian-orientated lifestyle and minimise energy consumption.

The following information is from X–Architects:

Xeritown
Dubai, United Arab Emirates
Xeritown is located in Dubailand, a new extension of the city towards the inland desert. Instead of considering the site as a Tabula Rasa "Xeritown" takes the desert and local climate as a context within which the urban form emerges by working with the natural environmentinstead of against it.

The project Xeritown aims are:

  • to consider environmental conditions (wind, sun, humidity) as generators of the urban form,
  • to integrate landscape, architecture and infrastructure in one system where all the parts collaborate to create a socially rich environment,
  • to consider sustainable design as an approach that permeates the entire design process, and not as simply finding technical solutions in the final phases,
  • to encourage a pedestrian-orientated lifestyle in a city which is strongly car-oriented and minimize energy consumption through active and passive means at an urban level as well as user level,
  • to conserve ecological resources like water, soil, flora and fauna to enhance the bio-diversity.

EDF national archives LAN architecture:

'EDF national archives' by LAN architecture in bure-saudron, france

photographer: julien lanoo

following up on our previous report of the project, paris-based office LAN architecture
has sent us images of the now complete 'EDF national archives', a five-storey facility to
store the utility company's records in bure-saudron, france. accommodating 70 km of shelves,
the 1,400 m2 centre puts at the core of its design a rational layout for optimum storage
efficiency as well as sustainability in its operations.

exterior view

inserted into a 33,000 m2 site, the building is wrapped in coloured prefabricated concrete panels
which feature an organic pattern made out of 120,000 stainless steel studs. each measuring 7 cm
in diameter, the collective motif lends the centre a distinctive and dynamic identity that reflects
the elements of its surrounding back to the site.

elevation

the simple volume is divided into two components: archives and offices. the former is composed
of 20 storehouses (200 m2 each) which are temperature- and humidity-controlled. the blocks can
resist fire for 2 hours and are fully equipped with a sprinkling system. sweeping views of the landscape
are provided at the office level, which largely remains transparent through floor to ceiling glazing.

(left) on site
(right) ground floor

integrated with renewable energy strategies, the total power consumed by the building is minimized
to 20 kWh/m2. ventilation is executed by the use of a double flow system with heat recuperation,
which cuts down on the energy consumption while not compromising on the quality of the air.
measuring 68 cm, the elevations paired with 30 cm-thick insulation results in a very high performance
envelope.
