[h=1]Common European Framework equivalencies[/h] Relating IELTS scores to the Council of Europe’s Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).

The chart illustrates how the IELTS band scores map onto the CEFR levels. The mapping is based upon a growing body of research, combined with long established experience of test use within education and society, as well as feedback from a range of test stakeholders regarding the uses of test results for particular purposes.

Work continues to refine our understanding of the relationship between IELTS and the CEFR levels. Please note that the band scores referred to in both tables are the overall scores and not the individual Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking scores.

The table indicates the IELTS band scores we expect to be achieved at the threshold of each particular CEFR level.

[h=1]IELTS band scores explained [/h] You will receive a Test Report Form setting out your overall band score and your scores for each of the four parts of the test: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.

Scores for each of the four parts are equally weighted. The overall band scores are calculated by taking the mean of the total of the scores of the four individual parts.

Overall band scores are reported to the nearest whole or half band. For the avoidance of doubt, the following rounding convention applies: if the average across the four skills ends in .25, it is rounded up to the next half band, and if it ends in .75, it is rounded up to the next whole band.

Thus, a candidate achieving 6.5 for Listening, 6.5 for Reading, 5.0 for Writing and 7.0 for Speaking would be awarded an overall band score of 6.5 (25 ÷ 4 = 6.25 = Band 6.5).

Similarly, a candidate achieving 4.0 for Listening, 3.5 for Reading, 4.0 for Writing and 4.0 for Speaking would be awarded an overall band score of 4.0 (15.5 ÷ 4 = 3.875 = Band 4.0).

However, a candidate achieving 6.5 for Listening, 6.5 for Reading, 5.5 for Writing and 6.0 for Speaking would be awarded band 6 (24.5 ÷ 4 = 6.125 = Band 6).

[h=1]IELTS assessment criteria[/h] You can be confident that your IELTS score is a true reflection of your English language proficiency. Examiners use detailed assessment criteria when they mark your test.
The IELTS 9-band scoring system is used to measure and report scores in a consistent manner. Examiners are trained in line with globally agreed standards to ensure consistency in the quality of their assessment.

[h=2]Listening and Reading tests[/h] IELTS Listening and Reading tests both contain 40 items. Each correct item is awarded one mark.
[h=2]Writing and Speaking tests[/h] Examiners use detailed performance descriptors when assessing the Writing and Speaking tests. These band descriptors describe performance in four categories:

  • task achievement
  • coherence and cohesion
  • lexical resource
  • grammatical range and accuracy

[h=1]Improve your IELTS score next time[/h] If you want to know how to improve your IELTS score, you must improve your English first! Take a look at your Test Report Form and see which skills you need to work on.
Taking the test again and again will not improve your results unless you work on the weaknesses identified in your test report form. You need to

  • review your preparation activities
  • consider how you performed on the test day
  • consider taking a course to improve your English in an area of weakness
  • once you are ready, book a new test
[h=2]How did you prepare last time?[/h] Think about how you prepared for your test. Did you do enough?
To improve your score next time, make sure you

  • practise the type of tasks included in an IELTS test (e.g. writing a short essay or letter for the Writing test)
  • get feedback and learn from your answers to practice questions
  • become more confident in your test-taking skills
Your teacher may be able to advise you about your skill level and whether you are ready to re-take your test.

[h=2]Re-take the IELTS test[/h] Book another test when you feel ready. You can take IELTS as many times as you like.
