Basic Principles of Flight Test Instrumentation Engineering

Basic Principles of Flight Test Instrumentation Engineering

The main purpose of the AGARD Flight Test Instrumentation Series is to provide monographs on the more important aspects of flight test instrumentation as a reference for the flight test engineer. The first monographs in the series discuss in-flight temperature measurements, fuel flow and engine rotation speed measurements, open and closed-loop accelerometers and magnetic tape recording; they will be followed by others. In this introductory volume it has been tried to highlight the main lines along which a flight test instrumentation system is developed, to indicate the main steps which must be taken during the design and to define the basic concepts used by each specialist. A flight test system is considered to include both the data collection and the data processing systems.

Aircraft Systems: Mechanical, Electrical and Avionics Subsystems

Aircraft Systems: Mechanical, Electrical and Avionics Subsystems

W,,,y | 2008 | ISBN: 0470059966 | 546 pages | PDF | 6,9 MB
This third edition of Aircraft Systems represents a timely update of the Aerospace Series’ successful and widely acclaimed flagship title. Moir and Seabridge present an in-depth study of the general systems of an aircraft – electronics, hydraulics, pneumatics, emergency systems and flight control to name but a few - that transform an aircraft shell into a living, functioning and communicating flying machine. Advances in systems technology continue to alloy systems and avionics, with aircraft support and flight systems increasingly controlled and monitored by electronics; the authors handle the complexities of these overlaps and interactions in a straightforward and accessible manner that also enhances synergy with the book’s two sister volumes, Civil Avionics Systems and Military Avionics Systems.

Aircraft Systems, 3rd Edition is thoroughly revised and expanded from the last edition in 2001, reflecting the significant technological and procedural changes that have occurred in the interim – new aircraft types, increased electronic implementation, developing markets, increased environmental pressures and the emergence of UAVs. Every chapter is updated, and the latest technologies depicted. It offers an essential reference tool for aerospace industry researchers and practitioners such as aircraft designers, fuel specialists, engine specialists, and ground crew maintenance providers, as well as a textbook for senior undergraduate and postgraduate students in systems engineering, aerospace and engineering avionics.

Using MATLAB® and SIMULINK®in Aerospace Applications
Abstract

Aerospace design applications often require the integration of multiple engineering disciplines,
including optical systems, signal processing, modeling and simulation, control systems, and focal plane
electronics. Interdisciplinary design challenges such as those faced by aerospace engineers call for a
robust set of tools that can be easily integrated and shared among a diverse group of technical
specialists. This aerospace application shows how The MathWorks family of tools can be used to
develop a complex simulation model for an optical tracker mounted on a gimbaled platform. The
application also describes the development of a Kalman filter–based tracker for a radar processing task.
The ease-of-use, coding efficiency, and seamless product integration provided by the M

ATLABSimulink
product family are highlighted throughout the application.

* ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780863413599
Book Description:
Radar is a legal necessity for the safe navigation of merchant ships and, within vessel traffic services, is indispensable to the operation of major ports and harbors. Target Detection by Marine Radar concentrates solely on civil marine operations and explains how civil surveillance radars detect their targets. There are numerous diagrams and worked examples to help the reader understand the principles underlying radar operation and to quantify the importance of factors such as technical features of specific equipment, the weather, and the ability of the operator. The accuracy with which targets are positioned on the radar screen and with which their progress is tracked or predicted depends on how definitely they have been detected, and so a whole chapter has been devoted to the issue of accuracy. The various international regulations governing marine radar are examined, a brief historical background is given to modern day practice and the book closes with a discussion of ways in which marine radar may develop to meet future challenges

The Concorde Story [2002]:Video

The Concorde Story [2002]:Video

The Concorde Story [2002]
By
* Publisher: Pegasus Entertainment
* ISBN / ASIN: B00006L9UR
Good overview of Flight testing Concorde
This DVD covers the history of flight testing Concorde up to its begin of the regular service between London or Paris to Washington DC and New York in the late 1970s ...
DVD starts with difficulties in designing the engines and delta wing for supersonic flights and shows images of tests on Handley Page 115 and Fairey Delta 2 jet-engines planes. Further chapters include stress-testing the materials to build the plane and construction work in Toulouse and Bristol in the 1960s. Most of the DVD shows superb onboard images of flight testing British prototype 001 by Concorde testpilot Brian Trubshaw in 1969 and later testflights by John Cochrane. The worldtour of the first British prototype is also summarized in nice images between London, Athens, Bombay and Sydney. The DVD also discusses the competition from Boeing Super Sonic Transport and Russian Tupolev Tu-144 airliner with images of the June 1973 crash of the latter on the Paris air show. The last chapters show the retirement of Concorde 101 to Duxford in 1977 and the ongoing debate of Concorde SST being banned by the USA because of safety, noise and pollution issues. Finally historic images are shown of the first commercial flight to Bahrain and the first transatlantic flight to New York with an interview of Captain Walpole.
Overall a good DVD especially if You're looking for early Black & White images of the construction and testing of this superb and unique aircraft !

Flying the Mountains : A Training Manual for Flying Single-Engine Aircraft

Flying the Mountains : A Training Manual for Flying Single-Engine Aircraft

Flying the Mountains : A Training Manual for Flying Single-Engine Aircraft
By Fletcher Fairchild Anderson

  • Publisher: McGraw-Hill Professional
  • Number Of Pages: 332
  • Publication Date: 2003-01-21
  • ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0071410538
  • ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780071410533
  • Binding: Paperback

Product Description:
This training guide diminishes the dangers and doubles the thrill--and safety--of flying single-engine aircraft at high altitudes in mountainous regions. Logically organized by phases of flight--from preflight preparation to landings--the author combines statistics, techniques, and examples of actions (correct and incorrect) that real pilots have taken in actual flight scenarios.

* Details training that offsets mountain flying mistakes
* Describes the effects of altitude on pilots and aircraft
* Outlines cold weather operations and precautions
* Includes search and rescue operation procedures
* Reviews take-off conditions from airport mountains

Summary: Great Learning Tool, Very Informative
Rating: 5
I am new to GA and a flatlander. The book is written specifically for the mountains but a lot of the information dealing with weather is very useful as a learning tool out of the mountains. Too bad the author was killed while flying in a canyon. I researched his death on the NTSB website and sure enough he was killed flying too low in a canyon and struck a wire. Overall a great book packed with great information.

Summary: Author Died Flying in the Mountains!
Rating: 1
I guess he failed to practice what he preached.

Summary: A saddened ending to a wonderful book
Rating: 5
As reported by the Telluride, Colorado Watch: Fletcher Fairchild Anderson died on Nov. 18, 2005 in an airplane accident in the Snake River Canyon of Wyoming. He was 57. I was so enthused by his humorous, caring, and clear writing style and by the valuable aviation wisdom that he carefully imparted that I sought to reach him by email in November, 2006 and discovered, instead, his obituary. I feel like I have lost a friend even though I never had the opportunity to meet Fletcher. His book will remain a treasured resource to me because of the insight of the central Colorado rockies that it provides. I store is with a copy of the Denver Sectional Aeronautical Chart with the goal of memorizing mountain pass, river and valley, and highway locations. I feel like I know the region after having read this book. I look forward to flying in this beautiful but unforgiving environment, after adequate personal instruction, and will continue to use Fletcher's book as my launch point to learn more and promote safe aviation practices to which he was devoted.

Increasing Aircraft Carrier Forward Presence: Changing the Length of the Maintenance Cycle (Rand Corporation Monograph)

The U.S. Navy’s aircraft carriers allow the nation to deter adversaries, bring airpower to bear against opponents, engage friends and allies, and provide humanitarian assistance. However, these powerful and versatile systems need continuous and regularly scheduled maintenance, and their crews require a great deal of training to attain and sustain readiness levels. The length of the carrier’s training, readiness, deployment, and maintenance cycle, the type of maintenance needed, and the timing of events within the cycle affect the carrier’s availability to meet operational needs. Over the past two decades, the proportion of time in a cycle that a carrier spends deployed has decreased, making it difficult for Navy planners to meet the forward-presence requirements of theater commanders. In future years, as the number of carriers in the fleet fluctuates, this challenge will be compounded. In this study, RAND examines the technical feasibility of different cycle lengths and their effect on the forward presence of Nimitz-class aircraft carriers. The authors assess several one- and two-deployment cycles, assuming a deployment length of six months and a time-between-deployments length equal to twice the duration of the previous deployment. The study also presents an analysis of the impact of different cycles on managing shipyard workloads. Among many findings, RAND concludes that shorter cycles can increase the forward presence of the carrier fleet and help level shipyard workloads. However, these shorter cycles will decrease fleet surge readiness. Longer, two-deployment cycles can increase forward presence, but may result in shipyard workload complications and deferred-work backlogs.
