شیمی فیزیك چیست؟

واژه "شیمی فیزیک" در سده 1700 بکار رفته است. میخائیل لو مونوزوف، شاعر، فیزیکدان و شیمیدان روسی در سال 1752 درس شیمی فیزیک را ارائه کرد.

شناخت گسترده شیمی فیزیک به عنوان یک مجوعه منسجم در سال 1887 با طرح ریزی مجله zeitschrift fÜr physikalische chemie توسط ویلهلم استوالد و با همکاری وانت هوف آغاز شد. استوالد تعادل شیمیایی، سینتیک شیمیایی و محلول ها را مورد تحقیق قرار داد و اولین کتاب درسی شیمی فیزیک را نوشت. وی سهم موثری در ترسیم نقش پیشتازانه گیبس در زمینه ترمودینامیک شیمیایی داشت و اوّلین کسی بود که اینیشتن را نامزد جایزه نوبل ساخت. تعجب آور آن که استوالد در مقابل نظریه اتمی ماده ایستاد و تا سال 1608 واقعیت اتم ها و مولکول ها را نپذیرفت.
بطور کلی استوالد وانت هوف و آرنیوس پایه گذاران شیمی فیزیک هستند. در آن سال ها اصولا تحقیق در زمینه شیمی فیزیک در سطح ماکروسکوپی صورت می گرفت. امروزه با بهره گیری از روشهای تجربی که خواص و فرآیندها را در سطح مولکولی مطالعه می کنند و با استفاده از کامپیوتر های سریعی که:
(الف)داده های حاصل از آزمایشات طیف سنجی و کریستالو گرافی تابش ایکس را تجزیه و تحلیل نموده،
(ب)خواص مولکولهایی که خیلی بزرگ نیستند را محاسبه کرده، و
(ج) شبیه سازی مجموعه ای از صدها مولکول را انجام می دهند توانایی شیمی فیزیک به شدّت افزایش می یابد. شیمی فیزیک مطالعه اصول فیزیکی است که خواص و رفتارهای شیمیایی را معیّن می نماید.

یک سیستم شیمیایی می تواند از هر دو دید گاه میکرسکوبی و ماکروسکوپی مورد مطاله قرار گیرد. دیدگاه میکروسکوپی بر پایه مفهوم مولکولی استوار است. در دیدگاه ماکروسکوپی خواص مادّه در مقیاس بزرگ و بدون آن که مفهوم مولکول به صراحت به کار رود مطالعه می شود. شیمی فیزیک را می توان به چهار مبحث اصلی تقسیم کرد:

ترمودینامیك، شیمی کوانتومی، مکانیک آماری و سینتیک.

ترمودینامیک علم ماکروسکوپی است که ارتباط های خواص تعادلی یک سیستم و تغییرات آن را مطالعه می کند.

مولکول ها، الکترون ها و هسته هایی که آنها را ساخته اند از مکانیک کلاسیک پیروی نمی کنند. در عوض حرکات آنها از قوانین مکانیک کوانتومی تعیین می شود. کاربرد مکانیک کوانتمی برای ساختار اتمی، پیوند مولکولی و طیف بینی شیمی کوانتومی را تشکیل می دهد.
علم ماکروسکوپی ترمودینامیک نتیجه ای از رخداد ها در سطح مولکولی (میکروسکوپی ) است. سطوح مولکولی و ماکروسکوپی توسط شاخه ای از علم به نام مکانیک آماری به یکدیگر مرتبط می شوند. مکانیک آماری بینشی در خصوص اعتبار قوانین ترمودینامیک ایجاد می کند و امکان محاسبه خواص ماکروسکوپی ترمودینامیکی را از روی خواص مولکولی میسر می سازد.

سینیتیک مطالعه سرعت فرآیند ها، نظیر واکنش های شیمیایی، مکانیک کوانتمی و مکانیک آماری توسعه نیافته است. در سینیتیک، مباحث ترمودینامیک، شیمی کوانتومی و مکانیک آماری استفاده می شود.
