Inclusive Urban Design: Streets For Life

Inclusive Urban Design: Streets For Life

This is the first book to address the design needs of older people in the outdoor environment. It provides information on design principles essential to built environment professionals who want to provide for all users of urban space and who wish to achieve sustainability in their designs.
Part one examines the changing experiences of people in the outdoor environment as they age and discusses existing outdoor environments and the aspects and features that help or hinder older people from using and enjoying them. Part two presents the six design principles for ‘streets for life’ and their many individual components. Using photographs and line drawings, a range of design features are presented at all scales of the outdoor environment from street layouts and building form to signs and detail. Part three expands on the concept of ‘streets for life’ as the ultimate goal of inclusive urban design. These are outdoor environments that people are able to confidently understand, navigate and use, regardless of age or circumstance, and represent truly sustainable inclusive communities.

Globalization and Regional Growth in Europe: Past Trends and Future Scenarios

Globalization and Regional Growth in Europe: Past Trends and Future Scenarios

After a description of the new forms of globalization currently shaping our world, and of their possible spatial effects, the book highlights which European regions have in the past succeeded in taking advantage of globalization trends and identifies the major reasons for their success. The book also offers a prospective analysis utilizing scenarios based on different assumptions of how globalization trends will develop, identifying the regional winners and losers for each scenario. The analysis greatly benefits from a unique database which contains, among others, data on FDI by sector and professions at the regional Nuts-2 level for all 27 EU countries. A time-span of more than 10 years is covered, and scenarios are developed for the future development up to 2020.

Green Urbanism: Learning From European Cities

Green Urbanism: Learning From European Cities

As the need to confront unplanned growth increases, planners, policymakers, and citizens are scrambling for practical tools and examples of successful and workable approaches. Growth management initiatives are underway in the U.S. at all levels, but many American "success stories" provide only one piece of the puzzle. To find examples of a holistic approach to dealing with sprawl, one must turn to models outside of the United States.
In Green Urbanism, Timothy Beatley explains what planners and local officials in the United States can learn from the sustainable city movement in Europe. The book draws from the extensive European experience, examining the progress and policies of twenty-five of the most innovative cities in eleven European countries, which Beatley researched and observed in depth during a year-long stay in the Netherlands. Chapters examine: •the sustainable cities movement in Europe •examples and ideas of different housing and living options •transit systems and policies for promoting transit use, increasing bicycle use, and minimizing the role of the automobile •creative ways of incorporating greenness into cities •ways of readjusting "urban metabolism" so that waste flows become circular •programs to promote more sustainable forms of economic development •sustainable building and sustainable design measures and features •renewable energy initiatives and local efforts to promote solar energy •ways of greening the many decisions of local government including ecological budgeting, green accounting, and other city management tools

Design of Urban Space: An Inquiry into a Socio-Spatial Process

Design of Urban Space: An Inquiry into a Socio-Spatial Process

Written to bridge the gap that exists in the approaches to urban design, Design of Urban Space addresses both the physical and social dimensions of the built environment in an integrated way. The author offers a powerful analysis of the urban design process and the nature of its product, urban space. He confronts key issues involving the confusion concerning the nature and scope of urban design and convincingly argues for a better understanding of urban design and urban space by concentrating on the intersection between the urban development process and everyday life. Interdisciplinary in concept and broad in example, this well structured and clearly written text makes
use of material from around the world to bring together ideas from social thought, human geography, urban sociology, architecture, and town planning

Brave New Neighborhoods: The Privatization of Public Space

Fighting for First Amendment rights is as popular a pastime as ever, but just because you can get on your soapbox doesn't mean anyone will be there to listen. Town squares have emptied out as shoppers decamp for the mega-malls; gated communities keep pesky signature gathering activists away; even most internet chat-rooms are run by the major media companies. Brave New Neighborhood considers what can be done to protect and revitalize our public spaces.

New Urbanism and American Planning: The Conflict of Cultures

New Urbanism and American Planning: The Conflict of Cultures

New Urbanism and American Planning presents the history of American planners’ quest for good cities and shows how New Urbanism is a culmination of ideas that have been evolving since the nineteenth century. In her survey of the last hundred or so years of urbanist ideals, Emily Talen identifies four approaches to city-making, which she terms ‘cultures’: incrementalism, plan-making, planned communities, and regionalism. She shows how these cultures connect, overlap, and conflict and how most of the ideas about building better settlements are recurrent. In the first part of the book Talen sets her theoretical framework and in the second part provides detailed analysis of her four ‘cultures’.She concludes with an assessment of the successes and failures of the four cultures and the need to integrate these ideas as a means to promoting good urbanism in America.

Eco-Urban Design

Eco-Urban Design

"Eco-Urban Design" focuses on the unprecedented challenges currently faced by architects and designers. In a world where climate change, diminishing natural resources and an increasing global population have become indisputable facts of life there is now a rising demand for evolved buildings that no longer endanger the Earth's fragile ecological systems. This book endeavours to tell the positive side of the story by featuring considered design solutions provided by the world's most innovative architects and engineers. By only including realised projects which have been subjected to post construction monitoring this publication provides evidence-based information that measured reductions in carbon emissions, water and energy usage can actually be achieved in the field and not just on the drawing board. These completed projects demonstrate best practice and will inspire a new hybrid generation of designers who will combine architecture and engineering skills to resolve a key environmental challenge. Furthermore, these creative construction projects from a variety of genres including, commercial property, public buildings, social housing and private homes give testimony to the fact that investment in green archineering also provides a commercial advantage to forward thinking developers and investors.

Biophilic Cities: Integrating Nature into Urban Design and Planning

Biophilic Cities: Integrating Nature into Urban Design and Planning

Tim Beatley has long been a leader in advocating for the "greening" of cities. But too often, he notes, urban greening efforts focus on everything except nature, emphasizing such elements as public transit, renewable energy production, and energy efficient building systems. While these are important aspects of reimagining urban living, they are not enough, says Beatley. We must remember that human beings have an innate need to connect with the natural world (the biophilia hypothesis). And any vision of a sustainable urban future must place its focus squarely on nature, on the presence, conservation, and celebration of the actual green features and natural life forms. A biophilic city is more than simply a biodiverse city, says Beatley. It is a place that learns from nature and emulates natural systems, incorporates natural forms and images into its buildings and cityscapes, and designs and plans in conjunction with nature. A biophilic city cherishes the natural features that already exist but also works to restore and repair what has been lost or degraded. In Biophilic Cities Beatley not only outlines the essential elements of a biophilic city, but provides examples and stories about cities that have successfully integrated biophilic elements--from the building to the regional level--around the world. From urban ecological networks and connected systems of urban greenspace, to green rooftops and green walls and sidewalk gardens, Beatley reviews the emerging practice of biophilic urban design and planning, and tells many compelling stories of individuals and groups working hard to transform cities from grey and lifeless to green and biodiverse.

Learning from the Japanese City: Looking East in Urban Design

Learning from the Japanese City: Looking East in Urban Design

Japan is the first modern 'free world' superpower with a non-Western culture; its prominence in the world grows day by day. As a result, there is a burgeoning interest in the West in all aspects of Japanese culture.
Japanese gardens and buildings have received considerable exposure recently but this timely publication is the first exposition of the Japanese city. It covers the form, character and organization of the buildings and spaces in Japanese cities and particularly the relationships between the buildings, squares and streets.
The author provides a historical overview of Western attitudes to Japanese built-form and contrasts these relationships in Japan with those of the West and explores the very different ways of thinking about space and time that underpin these contrasts in city form and organizations.

Post-Suburban Europe: Planning and Politics at the Margins of Europe's Capital Cities

Post-Suburban Europe: Planning and Politics at the Margins of Europe's Capital Cities

Post-suburbia is a term that encapsulates a variety of contemporary urban forms, in particular the 'edge city' - a term used to describe the rapid growth of new urban centres at the edges of established major cities. Widely discussed in the US, very little has been written about European edge cities and this book seeks to redress this imbalance, offering a comparative analysis that is located within the context of current East Asian and North American research, providing one of the first major works on the subject.

Examining the urban development and politics of five self-styled European edge cities - Kifissia near Athens, Getafe near Madrid, Noisy-le-Grand near Paris, Espoo near Helsinki, and Croydon near London, this study critically interrogates the key ideas that inform edge cities and presents valuable new insights into the planning and governance of some of Europe's most important city-regions and the future of their urban fabric.

Planning the Good Community: New Urbanism in Theory and Practice

Planning the Good Community: New Urbanism in Theory and Practice

An examination of new urban approaches both in theory and in practice. Taking a critical look at how new urbanism has lived up to its ideals, the author asks whether new urban approaches offer a viable path to creating good communities.
With examples drawn principally from North America, Europe and Japan, Planning the Good Community explores new urban approaches in a wide range of settings. It compares the movement for urban renaissance in Europe with the New Urbanism of the United States and Canada, and asks whether the concerns that drive today’s planning theory – issues like power, democracy, spatial patterns and globalisation- receive adequate attention in new urban approaches. The issue of aesthetics is also raised, as the author questions whether communities must be more than just attractive in order to be good.
With the benefit of twenty years’ hindsight and a world-wide perspective, this book offers the reader unparalleled insight as well as a rigorous and considered critical analysis.

The relationship between public and private spheres is one of the key concerns of the modern society. This book investigates this relationship, especially as manifested in the urban space with its social and psychological significance. Through theoretical and historical examination, it explores how and why the space of human socities is subdivided into public and private sections. It starts with the private, interior space of the mind and moves step by step, through the body, home, neighborhood and the city, outwards to the most public, impersonal spaces, exploring the nature of each realm and their complex, interdependent relationships.
